Mark Messier loses it after a goal by Rangers’ Jonny Brodzinski
Rangers legend Mark Messier can’t stand one trend in the NHL.
Capitals winger Tom Wilson was assessed a boarding penalty for a hit on center Jonny Brodzinski during the team’s 3-2 victory over the Rangers on Saturday.
Messier criticized Brodzinski, who went to the locker room after the goal, as guilty of putting himself in danger.
“I’m so tired of players putting themselves in vulnerable positions,” Messier said on ESPN’s broadcast. “This is crazy. If I had turned my back, I would have been in the league for five years [like] That. I played 26 [years] because I never put myself in vulnerable positions where a player can make a mistake. …
“You can see [Tom] Wilson essentially let him down with the goal. [Brodzinski] is in a vulnerable position. … He put himself in a vulnerable position for no reason. He saw it coming, at least turn sideways to take the hit and protect the puck if that’s what you want to do.”
Messier went even further, imploring the next generation to ignore Brodzinski’s antics.
“Boys and girls, don’t put yourself in that position,” Messier said. “It’s a learning skill. You have to be able to survive out there yourself.’
Ex-NHL defenseman PK Subban, now an analyst for ESPN, agreed.
“Everyone wants to throw a punch, but you gotta know how to take one,” Subban said. ‘Sometimes a man has you lined up, [Brodzinski] sees him coming, he looks for a moment, he knows Tom Wilson is coming, you turn around at that last moment and then you try to take the penalty. …
“This is where the referees need to crack down on that, they need to clear that up. As the D-man, you come in to make that hit. A guy runs like this, this happens every game, and we just don’t want this to be called at big moments in the game and be big decisions.”
