Hunter Biden pleads not guilty to tax charges
Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges in California on Thursday.
The controversial taxes did not include violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and did not implicate President Joe Biden in any wrongdoing.
“The steps Hunter has taken to avoid taxes are impressive, but not nearly as impressive as the Justice Department’s efforts to avoid direct consequences for his father, President Biden,” said Jonathan Turley, an attorney and professor at the George Washington University Law School. , wrote in the New York Post.
Special Counsel David Weiss indicted Hunter in December on nine charges, including three felonies: failing to file taxes, evading an assessment and filing a fraudulent form.
The indictment alleges that Hunter “willfully failed to pay his 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 taxes on time, despite having access to funds to pay some or all of these taxes” and instead “lost millions of dollars spent on an extravagant lifestyle.”
Legal experts criticized Weiss’ scope of indictment for three reasons:
- Weiss did not accuse Hunter of being an unregistered foreign agent.
- Limiting the charge to tax evasion avoids abuse of influence (implying Joe Biden).
- Weiss only charged Hunter with tax evasion that allegedly occurred only in recent years.
Hunter faces up to 17 years in prison if convicted. In total, he faces a prison sentence of 42 years for nine tax charges and three weapons charges.
Hunter’s problems aren’t limited to charges. He is a key witness in the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden.
House investigators announced they would investigate the Biden family in November 2022. They revealed that Joe Biden had received money from James and Hunter Biden. They also showed that nine additional Biden family members received payments from the family’s foreign business ventures, including two of Joe Biden’s grandchildren.
