Parents think I’m ‘cruel’ for poking my little girl’s ears, but she won’t remember the pain
A young mother has come under fire from some parents for her “unnecessary” act of piercing the ears of her four-month-old baby.
Sandy, a mother of three, revealed she had her ears pierced as a baby and applauded her parents for the decision.
The Canadian mom expected similar support when she took her baby to a professional piercing parlor she got – but some other parents criticized her for her “cruel” act.
‘It is recommended to do [the piercings] so they’re less likely to touch and pull their ears!’ Sandy explained, while hundreds of others echoed her position.
Doctors provide no specific recommendation as to when to pierce babies’ ears, the decision rests in the parents’ hands. The only suggestion is that they are older than three months.
A video on TikTok showed Sandy sitting with her baby on her lap.

“I had to pray,” she said. “I can’t see her cry.”
The mother held her baby’s head in place while two professionals approached each ear with a piercing gun.
She was immediately in tears, but her pain seemed to subside as soon as her brothers arrived to comfort her.
“Of course my sons had to come and support their sister,” Sandy said in the short clip.
Ever since Sandy got her ears pierced as a baby, she “doesn’t remember.” So she was inspired to do the same with her own baby.
The mother also revealed that professional piercers had previously pierced the ears of babies as young as a few days old, but she decided to wait four months.
Another mother was slammed for piercing her daughter’s ears after just one day in hospital, with many parents reiterating that she should wait until the child is old enough to make the decision on her own.
The mother, who posts under her daughter’s name – Lara – on TikTok, shared an innocent video of her baby girl just hours after she was born compared to her now three-month-old.
The adorable toddler sported a tiny flower earring visible in the footage from her first 24 hours on Earth, and it caused a raucous blast in the comments section below.
But others defended the decision, saying it is customary in some cultures to pierce young girls’ ears at an early age.
“Maybe it’s just me, but the day my kids were born, pierced ears were very high on my list of concerns,” said one woman.

“Wow, this is another level for me…I just can’t understand it. And it hurts the same as when they are older! Don’t kid yourself,” said another.
A third added: ‘Why shouldn’t they be given a choice whether or not to have their ears pierced? This is heartless. I let my babies decide when they understand these things.”
While it is unknown where Lara and her mother live, it is presumably not Australia as she confirmed that it was the neonatologists at the hospital who pierced Lara’s ears.
“When they are 2-3 days old, they don’t feel pain for like a year or two!” she wrote.
‘The holes are made at birth in the hospital by neonatologists (doctors specialized in the care of newborns).’

The mother claimed that babies’ earlobes are softer when they are very young and that her daughter would not have felt any great pain, in fact, she “didn’t even react.”
Others agreed that it was common practice to pierce the ears of young girls as babies.
“In my country they pierce the baby girls on the first day they are born,” one woman replied.
Love how she has pierced ears! Honestly, I would do the same,” said another.
A third added: ‘I love the earrings <3 Well done mommy and congratulations. Ignore all hate'.
